Stress and Anxiety: They Look Alike, But They're Not the Same.

In everyday life, the words stress and anxiety are used almost as if they mean the same thing. We often say "I'm stressed at work" or "I'm very anxious", without always distinguishing between the two. In psychology, however, these are two different experiences — with distinct causes, duration, and effects on our body and mind.

By understanding the difference, we can more effectively deal with what we're feeling and take better care of our mental health.

What Is Stress?

Stress is our body's natural reaction to an external event that puts pressure on us — such as a deadline at work, a difficult situation, or an unexpected problem. Our body mobilises to respond to the "threat", releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

Stress can be:

Stress is usually temporary and tied to something specific happening around us.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety, on the other hand, doesn't need an external cause. It's a continuous feeling of worry or fear about something that might happen. It's tied to thoughts like: "What if I fail?", "What if they judge me?", "What if something bad happens?"

Anxiety lives in the future, and is often disproportionate to reality. It can be a daily occurrence, but when it becomes chronic and intense, it develops into an anxiety disorder that affects a person's ability to function.

What Are the Key Differences?

StressAnxiety
Caused by external events. Can exist without an external cause.
Temporary in duration.Often prolonged or chronic.
Focused on the present.Focused on the future.
Can be motivating.Often paralysing.
Addressed by changing circumstances.Requires psychological support.

Why Does the Distinction Matter?

Because with the right recognition, we can find the right solution. Because prolonged anxiety without support can lead to:

Because when we know exactly what's happening to us, we become empowered and can take care of ourselves in a more targeted, effective way.

What Can We Do?

If you're experiencing stress:

In Summary

Stress and anxiety look alike but they're not the same. The first is a normal reaction to challenges. The second runs deeper, is often internal, and can keep us trapped in a cycle of fear and worry.

Recognising the difference is the first step toward taking care of ourselves. If you feel that something is weighing on you or worrying you more than it should, it's worth seeking support. You're not alone.

If you feel ready to begin this journey, we're here to walk it with you.
